Tips for the Staycation

With millions of people around the globe stuck at home with cancelled vacation plans, anything that can spark the feeling of a relaxing getaway can help boost the mood. Though nothing truly compares to escaping life for a while (or the house for that matter), there are some small things you can do to help mimic the vacay feels.

Scents are very powerful and can instantly transport you to a positive memory or feeling of comfort. I am a huge advocate of taking longs baths for the health benefits inside and out, along with the sensory stimulation they can bring. If you can’t take the plunge, a scented candle or aroma therapy is en excellent tool for coping with angst and fighting depression. No candles or essential oils on hand? Trying baking something to fill your home with pleasant smells.

Music is also a powerful tool to boost the mood, if you select something that doesn’t start the waterworks. Ambient sounds like spa music, sounds of nature like ocean waves, a creek in a forest, or birds chirping can do the trick. Try something that’s new for you to distract you from the usual routine around the house.

Get outside. Even if it’s cold out, get out there. The fresh air and connection to nature boosts serotonin levels and raises the level of oxygen in the brain. Plus the vitamin D plays an important role in warding off depression. Although a stroll around the yard may not quite match up to a sandy beach, the little efforts while stuck at home can make a big difference.
